The coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on teaching around the world. The ability to organize video calls made it possible to continue the learning process and conduct classes online. However, this solution has disadvantages. This is about practical skills. In the fall, the University of Michigan School of Nursing turned to Microsoft Dynamics 365 for help creating a solution to this problem.

Dynamics 365 Guides is a mixed reality software for Microsoft HoloLens. With it, users can create instructions in 3D. To provide an opportunity to study complex physical procedures and concepts, the developers suggest using video, holographic content, photos and text.

Developers from Dynamics 365 Guides have partnered with the School of Nursing and were able to develop a pilot project to test how such an environment would help create a nursing curriculum. The aim of the project is to develop a standardized program. Such a program should be flexible and at the same time provide students with the necessary theoretical and, most importantly, practical skills. This development will make students more independent from external circumstances and will make it possible not to lose the quality of the education they receive.

Traditionally, students use mannequins in the form of a human body or human organs. Such equipment helps to experience tactile feedback. And very often students have difficulties with complex procedures.

Dynamics 365 Guides allows students to complete assignments step by step multiple times. HoloLens provides a holographic instruction card. Students can perform tasks on a mannequin and then move on to the next stage. This is done because the interface is hands-free. Each step is described through text and video explanations using three-dimensional objects placed in space.

An additional advantage of this technology is territorial availability. You can be in any current in the world to practice. The teacher can also exercise control by calling through HoloLens.

Next year, the School of Nursing will continue to work on comprehensive procedures manuals. More and more people will be enrolled in the School of Medicine to perform mandatory procedures for residents and nurses.
